    Tree Straps and Sap

Hi everyone! I was wondering what kind of solutions people have come up with to keep their tree straps clean so that you aren't getting sap inside of your pack and on the rest of your gear.

I've been using whoopies for the past few years and I just simply packed my tree straps in a separate bag when it comes time to leave camp. But this year I'm trying out a new system with webbing/buckle suspension and a bishop bag so I intended on leaving everything attached throughout trips. Part of the reason of switching to webbing/buckles is to try and simplify setup so I am struggling to find an easy solution that wouldn't add complication or a weight penalty.

What does everyone else do to contain sappy tree straps?

I use buckles on a couple of my setups and i simply remove them from the hammock and pack them separate, just like i would with the whoopies. I haven't come across a better solution as of yet.

I think my ideal solution would be a compartmentalized warbonnet style stuff sac.

What about a modified Bishop bag with two pockets on the outside, facing the ends of the Bishop bag? The straps get left out of the main compartment and put into the two respective outside pockets.

after thought edit: It could exacerbate tangling, but a bag with two pockets could suffice, I think? More like two main pockets with a wall between them. It would be easier and faster to make.

Yeah separate bag. I've ruined tree straps with sap and just thrown them away. What I've also thought of doing is sticking leaves to the tree where my straps will be to keep them from getting coated. You definitely don't want that stuff on your gear.

I've also thought about some kind of protection between the straps and the tree. Maybe even just a thin nylon sleeve.

    That sap sack looks cool:

Or you could just leave the straps hanging out the opposite ends of you bishop's bag and then cover them with Zip-Loc bags.

Or you could always move to Vermont where winter's never going to end and the sap's nover going to start flowing ;-)

I switched to my UCR or Whoopie attached permanently to my straps for just this reason. A whoopie hook attaches to hammock. They go in a ziplock.
