    Trader Joes $18 dollar hammock

My nephew came to the campground where we work with his cub scouts yesterday. He has a hammock he got for $18. Not a bad little hammock. The suspension he bought for it weighs about 12 lbs and has a 300 lb limit. He has a 20 degree climashield lightweight sleeping bag and that is it. Temps got down to 46 degrees, probably a little colder down by the lake. I told him to call me if he got cold and needed a pad. He did not call. Huh?

Maybe he was just toughing it out? I am imagining there is no insulation in the underside of the hammock. 46 degrees and no insulation would be brutal.

That's cool though, 18 bucks. Ill have to check it out next time I venture to one.

Two of my girls slept in their hammocks with only 50° synthetic sleeping bags on a night that went to 47°. Both said they were perfectly warm. I think kids tolerate the cold better. Maybe they don't compress the sleeping bags as much.

I just talked to my nephew. Said he felt a little chilly but not enough to bother him. Said his feet did not even get cold. He is around 40 years old. I don't get it. I would have been miserable. He had no pad just the bag.

Just goes to show there is no "right way", or one "must have/do ____" in order to enjoy a hammock.

Some insulating materials do better when compressed than others. Climashield does outperform down in that respect, although at what the bag was rated for and the compression factor, it does kinda give one pause before using just that.

    Was he drinkin?
No wind would help. Maybe he's just not a puss. totally kidding.
A lot of life is just how bad you want it.
Also I often lay in my setup and am hyper critical of every aspect so that when I really need it to function I know I'm covered.
That's a far cry from what I could probably get away with If I really wanted or had to.
Lastly maybe it's just that the force is strong in your nephew. Certain Monks have shown it's possible to raise/lower body temp/blood pressure with body mastery and meditation. Tibetans? I can't remember.
