    Noob questions about hammock

Before you sew on the channel, is there an order that you roll the hems in? Do you roll them (and sew them) 2 times over? There don't seem to be any comprehensive guides on hammock sewing for absolute beginners in the stickies subforum... and I'm going through all my neurotic over-analyzing mental checklists before I start.

I used to roll once, iron, pin, sew, roll again, iron, pin, sew.
I am now more proficient at rolling and having the raw edge tucked away while sewing, so I just roll and sew all in one action now. No pins, no ironing, only one stitch line needed.

Do it however feels comfortable for you at your level of ability, there is no wrong way to do this.

Depends on the use of the item. If there is going to be any stress in the hem, I roll it once and sew, then roll it again and sew. The two rows of stitching help reinforce the hem.
But, if there is no load on the hem, I do it in one step.

Does it matter if you sew the ends or the sides first?

You have to do the long sides first and then the ends if you want end channels. If you hem the ends first, the side hems will close off the channel.

I go overboard on the end channel if I'm going to run the suspension through it and double it up as in this sketch. The red lines are stitching...

Ignore the wording "two layers folded over as one...that is for a double layer hammock".

Here's how I hem the long edges (Lost_Biker demostrates his method also in post 31)...https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...04#post1078404

Gah, my hem isn't perfectly flat or perpendicular! Does it matter? Should I start over?

(I folded it over in the picture)

No point, this way people know you sewed it yourself. As I have read on here before "if it was perfect people wouldn't believe you did it yourself". I do believe it is better then my first attempt, and mine has been functioning fine for like 4 days now so it has definitely stood the test of time

I fold once about 1/4 inch..sew, fold again about 1/4 inch and sew. I then fold over creating a channel about 3 inches. I then sew 3 lines of stitching.. The attached picture gives you an idea. As this is a dummy hammock I use for classes to show people what a gathered end hammock looks like ( one end is whipped and the other is not gathered to show a before and after ). For a full size hammock I would 3 rows/lines of stitches.

You seams, lines, stitches ect do not have to be straight or perfect. I tell people I have a true hand crafted hammock.

What if you just run the whipping through it? How many layers and rows of stitching would you use?
