I'll admit that I didn't wade through all 33 pages of this thread, so excuse my ignorance, but what makes the nacrabiner different from the loop shackle as linked in the original post? Is it the additional use of the bury that makes it a nacrabiner?

Is there a 'howto' hidden in this thread somehow? I seem to be missing the instructions on how to make a 'nacrabiner'!

    Thanks!

Try looking in post #7 of this tread. Tne link in that thread goes to Nacra533's photo gallery and gives you a good idea of the basics of making the nacrabiner.

    Throwing an idea out there

Hello, Ive been lurking about in the forums and I have learned so much from the ideas that I have found here. Thank you everyone for all the ideas. This time, I would like to share mine.

I was interested in the Narcabiners and Scarabs (solomon bar + carabiners=scarab?). I cant find any amsteel or any small diameter high tension ropes in my country (Philippines) for use as a hammock suspension device (I use webbing) so I'm just going to implement these things for a water bottle attachment to my hipbelt or for a knife or small axe so I have easy access to them with a secure soft shackle.

Ive found a video on youtube that I got a "lightbulb moment" from.

    Here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGDIm5bcQRM

The part I'm interested in is the "beginning the belt" portion. Could we use that for the part where the closing loop catches the stopper knot on the end? I tried it and it does close the loop when loaded with a water bottle, but I'm concerned that the part that cinches the loop is a bit too loose and, well not too pretty (lol). Is there any other way i can make this idea better?

And about the Scarabs, I still cant picture how the solomon bar works on it. Is it just a small loop of cord, then the solomon bar is tied on the loop end with a separate piece of cord? how does it close automatically when under load?

I'll be looking forward to your replies

Scarab - TeeDee started using the term to describe the Solomon Bar on the nacrabiner and any spliced fixed loop since the Solomon Bar reminded him of an Egyptian Scarab sitting on the loop.

the scarab does not automatically lock under pressure.it is slid shut by hand.it is tied on with a different cord.i like this stile better as it is easier to open/close with cold/numb fingers

I too have adopted using a Solomon bar "scarab" to open and close the loop shackle/nacrabiner. I find it much easier to deal with especially if the shackle is under any load.

I was thrilled to see the Solomon bar used as a sliding "scarab" because I can do a Solomon bar (splicing, on the other hand, seems like a form of witchcraft to me (I'm pretty sure they burned splicers back in the middle ages, but I'll have to check on that)).

What are y'all using to make your scarabs? From the photos I've seen, it doesn't appear to be another piece of amsteel.
You're gonna need a bigger hammock

I use a waxed whipping twine, similar to this from West Marine. The inner strings from paracord might work too.
