    Neighborhood Campout

Kids are on spring break and somehow over margaritas a couple days ago I convinced my wife and the neighbors to go backyard camping (the kids didn't take much convincing)

It gives me a chance to test my new HG quilts that showed up today. The ground dwellers can just suffer :-)

Started out at 41 and sunny. By the time everything's was set up it dropped to 29 and we are getting rain/snow. Supposed to get down to 20 tonight so I will put the TQ and UQ to a good test!!

Got my Jetboil are fired up to make some Carmel Apple cocktails. Should be fun!! Wish me luck.

Almost forgot, I'm trying out the tent pole mod for the first time.

So what time did the ground dwellers decide they were better off back in a warm house?!

Ha!! They all made it all night. I did make it easy for them. In addition to air mattresses and thermarest pads, they each had at least 2 sleeping bags including one 0 degree down bag each.

I also donated all of my Nalgene bottles for bed warmers. There in lies the problem with my nights sleep.

In addition to the fact that this is my first night with my quilts and I didn't have he UQ set up very well, I ran out of Nalgene bottles. So I ran up to the house and grabbed another (cheap) water bottle. I fire up the jet boil, fill up the bottle and put it in my hammock. About an hour later I strip down to my sleeping wools and climb in to be greeted by 32 ounces of really hot water that had leaked out of the cheap bottle!!

Luckily besides myself getting soaked, the hammock trapped most of the water so the new down quilts were only slightly damp. I went to the house and toweled off my pants and my shirt and then tried to dry the hammock as much as possible.

Between the slightly damp hammock, the 21 degree weather with 15mph winds and the fact that I didn't have my UQ tightened up enough, I had a pretty miserable night, but there was no way I was going to be the one that went and slept inside!!!

Once the wind died down and the hammock dried out I did get some sleep. I learned a few valuable lessons, that's for sure!
