Nope, it's just heavier than a stick in thewoods
I've seen a few posts of people doing exactly the same thing, so yeah it's fine.
He's just using a marlin spike hitch with a beaner instead of a toggle. I've done that. It works well.

There's a whole discussion about it. I skimmed, but you should be good. Just make sure everything is dressed tightly.
Post #53 offers a good tip - though I don't know anyone that makes the MSH on the working end - that seems like it would be a silly idea.
Thanks folks. Just didn't want to pickup any bad habits. Thanks silentorpheus for the link.
So if one wanted to tie their hammock rope directly (sans whoopie) to that 'biner, would there be a proper knot for that?

define "hammock rope". Are you going to be adjusting from the hammock side, i.e. whoopie slings? Or something else?

that will work. HYOH
whoopies are lighter than most ropes though.
Tree strap - tie on a biner as close to tree as possible using a MSH - loop whoopie onto biner then other end of whoopie is girth hitched directly to your hammock or hooked to existing hammock rope loop.
Whoopies do require more distance between the trees.
May also want to try long treestraps with cinch buckles like warbonnet. A bit heavier, but easy to adjust.
