Some tarps require the ridge line above. If the tarp has a catenary cut (curve) on the top edge it is a better "fit" if the ridge line goes above. Some people use above ridge line in summer but under ridge line in winter to give more support for snow fall. If ridge line is above, you can hang laundry on it during the day. I used to go under but now I go above and use the smallest S biner on each end to keep the over line and tarp together. Sure, I could feed the over line though rings on the tarp itself (less gear and oh so much lighter) but I'm still at the futzing around stage and it is easier to make changes that way.
