Hi all -
I found this site while searching for overnight hikes in the NJ area. I'm completely new to all this, but love hiking and camping. Any beginner hints/tips/tricks are appreciated.
If there's anyone in the area that wants to show me the ropes, let me know. I'll also be looking for some used beginner gear (searching the forums as well).

Welcome to the forum! If you are up for a bit of a weekend trip, there is a group hang coming up in PA. Info for it can be found here. You will be able to see all sorts of set ups and try different things to see what is right for you.
In the meantime, check out Shug's helpful video series on youtube. It helped me learn the ropes, and any specific questions you may have can be answered by the fine folks here.

Welcome from PA. +1 on making it over to MAHHA and checking out Shugs videos. Depending on what part of NJ you are from you might make it over to one of the 501 hangs (where the AT crosses Route 501 in PA). You will see them in the North East trip planning section every month or two.

The Spring MAHHA is probably the largest group hang in this area; usually 70-100 hangers:
