seems like i read a post not too long ago about how to pack tarp stakes so as to not poke holes in your pack, tarp or other gear. can't find it now, so i thought i'd start a new thread with something i did this week when packing my stakes. i noticed that my 45L pack's internal frame is basically removable aluminum stays behind the bladder pocket that run about 3/4 the length of the pack. my particular model has straps that fold over the top of the stays to hold them in place. well, i use an 8.5 x 8.5 tarp hung like a diamond, so i only need 2 stakes (which have shock cord loops ties thru the eye, btw) to tie down the two corners. it just so happens that there is enough room in the aluminum stay pockets that i can slide the stakes inside the stay pockets. the pockets basically form a sheath such that the stakes are held in a vertical position with no stress on the tips. i'm confident that i could carry 4 aluminum stakes if i needed to carry a hex tarp. just passing it along for those who need it.
if you didn't know before now..."now you know, and knowing is half the battle."
