    Mosquito netting options...opinions please.

Hello, my first post here so forgive me if I've posted this in the wrong area. Anytime I've camped or backpacked I've taken along light hammock to lounge in. I now would like to actually try some more hammock camping. I have a Ticket To The Moon double hammock which is similar to the other parachute "silk" hammocks like ENO, Trek Light etc. I have a tarp, so that's no problem. My issue is the mosquito netting. Do any of you use one of these types of hammocks for backpacking? I know ENO makes the Guardian Bug Net, but at $55 (more expensive than my hammock) and at 16 oz., I'm looking for a good alternative - something cheaper & lighter. (REI sells the Mombasa Defender, which is $26 & 7 oz. I don't know if that would work.)

Any feedback would be appreciated, thank you.

    For a functional-but-not-elegant solution....

I've been using one of these for over a year, and had no issues in a Speer-style (end gathered, symmetrical) hammock with a ridgeline. I clip it in near the end ring buckles, and it drapes over me. Although it is probably possible, so far no mosquitoes have found a to fly under the mesh, then up and around to find a bitable part of me.

I just got back from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, and had ZERO issues with this. Of course, I also sprayed it with permethrin (Permanone brand) prior to first use last year. That stuff is amazing....

I'm curious about this as well - I have a SBPro and sometime I end up flipping the net up and over my ridge line but it would be nice if instead I could just do away with it. Was looking at the ENO solution but was curious what others have done. ghandrick's solution looks like a good low cost alternative

Hammock Bliss makes the same thing as that ENO brand bug net for $35.00.

Or, you could make your own bug net cocoon by getting two 10' lengths of no-see-um netting and sewing the edges together, and put drawcord channels on the ends - like a cylinder that your hammock goes through the center of. Not the best method, but it's easy to make and would work.

I tried laying in a DIY hammock yesterday w/no netting and could not get 1 full second of rest without being attacked. We haven't gotten a break from the rain since it was coming down as snow - they're horrendous here in Maine this year with that extended breeding season.

I just made a mosquito sock last week, $7.00. Found some mosquito material at walmart, stitched it up as sclittlefeild said, and it can be used on any of the hammocks I own. String and thread to sew it were already purchased. So total cost was probably around ten or twelve bucks. Mosquito net is a priceless peice of equipment. I had to bag one outdoor trip due to the feeding frenzy.

Check out Rockywoods.com Camomesh fabric, $6.99/yard x 60" wide drap over ridgeline and use two of the plastic grip clips clamped at the folded over ends of mesh at each end of the hammock.Has worked fine for me for years.

questions about the DIY ENO style netting (as I have my netting being shipped). Do you need to shape the pattern or just a tube? I have a zipper being shipped too, so I intend to put a door in it. Has anyone tried to make clips like ENO? I happen to have clips from an old, already dissected tent.
    Thanks,
    Scott

If your adding a zipper, then I don't see why you couldn't shape it more to follow the hammocks form. Just be sure you make it extra roomy. Possibly have a friend sit in the hammock to get an idea of how the shape should be cut. While they are in the hammock, take a few measurements from ridgeline, for reference later, if needed.
