Hardware store metal rings for the drips?

I was at the hardware store today, one of those good old fashioned ones that has cool DIY stuff and other gadgets, and saw these metal rings. They didn't have any documentation on their strength rating, but they were welded. I'm wondering if there is an effective way to see if this will hold or if anyone has tried these generic type rings before. I'm thinking they could be a drip device in-between my hammock and whoopie. I was also thinking about an individual link from a chain, heading back there tomorrow with my kitchen scale to check weights.

I used some off a horse bridle - about 2". They work fine but they are very heavy.

Welded rings are not really recommended for hanging suspensions. The aluminum solid rings from DIY Gear work great and are not very expensive at a little less than $3 each. I use a set on a structural ridge line.

SnrMoment I'm psyched that you led me to DIY gear. Those rings look great and seem pretty light. Thanks. I was going to make some armsteel continuous loops on my Hennessy and put a whoopie on the other end of this ring. This would drip all of the water off the line so long that it's under the hammock, right?

Here's a method of using really any type ring where you simply wrap the whoopie or line once around the ring. This way the ring doesn't have to bear the force of the suspension and also you can adjust the position of the ring or even remove it.

I can't believe that I just spent 46 seconds of my life watching water drip off of a ring!
    Seriously, good demonstration.

I've seen some packages were these are rated, not very high for the smaller rings - like 100lbs or so. I was going to use them for suspension but after my experiment with the key fob carabiner I skipped over questionable gear. Also, unless you pay $$ for Stainless Steel, those types of rings have rusted on me.

On the other hand, as use for a non-load bearing drip ring - could work. But I just modify/rig my hammocks to have an aluminum ring near the ends and attach what ever suspension fits my whimsy to the rings.

Never even thought of using them as a drip device without using to hold load. Great demonstration, thanks!

Does anyone know if there are similar demonstrations with other drip techniques? The cotton scrap wrapped around amsteel, for instance?
