Suspending your backpack from your hammock?

Okay, so this question is for the serious backpackers. Where do you put your backpack when you are hammock camping? I have seen a picture of what looked like a backpack being suspended from the hammock suspension system (near one of the trees). I have also seen people with a second smaller hammock laying nest to main hammock to store their gear in. So where to store the backpack: under the hammock on the ground, at the base of the tree, tied to the tree, suspended from a tree, suspended from the hammock suspension system or something else entirely different? If you have pictures of your hang with backpack, that would be great to see as well.

As far as hanging the backpack from the hammock suspension system, is their any reasons why you wouldn't want to do that?

Yes....they all work and comes down to personal preference. Just put it someplace and some how where it will be safe from rain, tree sap, critters that nibble on stuff, and where you can get to any gear you're going to keep in it when you need it.

Nope no reason at all that I can come up with that you can not or should not hang it from your suspension...other than maybe feeling it swing around in a strong breeze bumping it into the hammock and keeping you awake at night.

Here is a picture of my pack with pack cover on hanging from the head end of my BB.

here is a shot with my pack on the tree about center pic and a gear hammock off the same tree headed to the right of center. with the BB headed to the left.

It all works, no right or wrong, just what works for you.

I'd be inclined to hang it, even if there aren't bears around, because having other little critters nibble holes in the pack is no fun. Take what you need for the night (no food!) and hang the rest just like a regular bear bag. Just my 2¢...

If one wanted to hang it from their hammock suspension system, how would one go about doing that safely?

I just strap mine to one of the trees I'm hanging on (after removing all food and trash)

I keep a S-biner and small loop of zing-it and use that to hang pack from head end of hammock. Clips right onto the loops or whoopie right near the hammock so it's under the tarp. My cap, headlamp, other stuff gets hooked onto the biner also normally.

I just use the strap that goes over the top of the pack with the plastic clips.

I like to hang my pack to keep it off the ground, but where I hang it depends on the weather. I also like using a gear hammock...

ENO makes a "gear hammock" for under $30. But it isn't waterproof. They suggested hanging it under your regular hammock but I can't imagine that much clearance. MollyMac has a waterproof gear hammock for about $80. I bought two yards of coated nylon and had a local sewing shop create a flap - so the gear hammock is about 3 x 5 ft with a 3 ft rain flap. Haven't tried it out yet. We've had several inches of snow this morning - summer is a long ways off.

If there's no real threat of rain, I usually attach it to one of the trees I'm hanging from. If it might rain, I attach it right near the head of the hammock.

I always have an extra mini biner or two, which work fine, as most of the gear in the bag has been taken out.
