What tarp to buy... (not American made)

    Hi,

I live in Belgium and I am looking for a not to expensive Tarp. My old one was quite heavy and has holes in it.
But I don't want to pay a lot of shipping costs and don't wanna wait weeks for it arrives.
So do you guys know a good tarp that I can get in Europe?

    Thanks

    Dries

    Hi Dries,

have a look at www.ddhammocks.com or http://haengemattenshop.shopgate.com/item/33313139 (they offer Hennessy tarps as well)

Good valuable tarps in different sizes.

    Cheers

How much is "too much"? What kind of weight would still be acceptable to you?

Generally, I would always recommend not buying a PU coated tarp, but rather spend a little bit more and go with silnylon. PU coated polyester tarps are cheap, but also heavy - and they wear out a lot quicker than silnylon. You might save short term, but long term I don't think it's cheaper. Maybe try a local Google search in your language for "silnylon tarp" and see what comes up.

A quick search on Google.de and Google.co.uk brought up a couple of hits:

I'm sure that there are more silnylon tarps available in Europe. You might still consider ordering from the US, though. I don't know how customs is in Belgium and what kind of duty and tax-free allowances you have, but in Germany, orders up to 150 EUR (this includes shipping fees, though) are only charged EU-Tax of 19%. If I were to order the huge Warbonnet Mamajamba (11' x 10'), I would pay 110 USD for the tarp, 39.30 USD for shipping to Europe and ~21 EUR EU-Tax (charged by the customs office). This means I would pay only ~130 EUR for a really lightweight silnylon tarp with perfect coverage specific to hammocks. I don't think any of the other tarps I listed compares if you consider cut, weight and price... And you might still get lucky and the customs office doesn't charge you at all. Some European countries don't seem to bother under a certain threshold. I never paid customs for anything under 200 EUR or so when I lived in Ireland...

I just saw that UK Hammocks has some Warbonnet tarps in stock right now, too. The Mamajamba would cost you 85 GBP plus 15 GBP shipping to Belgium. So you would get the tarp quickly and pay only 121 EUR...

Alpkit also has some silnylon tarps, although I have not looked closely at weights and cost.

Just consider that compared with the WB MJ it is more expensive and - which would be the deciding factor for me - more than half a kilo! (exactly 553g) heavier... But if buying from a company you know and trust makes you happy, go for it.
