I have. I used aluminum tubing instead of a wood dowel, though. My kids used them with their hammocks continuously for over a week and we never had a problem with the cables pulling out of the ground. One night 2 of my daughters shared one hammock on the stand (they are 8 & 9) and it was still holding strong in the morning.

I made this up, works fantastic and is very small to carry around
Though not really packable more like car camping scenario check out the BooneDOX. No the cheapest option but setup looks nice and easy and nothing to drive into the ground. I'm awaiting a reply from the company with a bunch of asked questions.
