    Sharing the Kool-aid!

This is the first time that I met a hammocker in the woods! She was on a day hike and testing out some gear. I wanted to give her many suggestions, but I didn't want to come off as a creep. I did tell her about the forum, and I hope she checks in! The Holly Cross wilderness is beautiful!

Another North Texas guy!!! I've heard great things about the Holy Cross area, guess I need to get up there soon.

In all the times I've been out hiking or backpacking, I've never encountered a hammocker. Is that because there are so few of them or because hammockers tend to pitch in stealth sites? When you pitch a hammock, do you tend to do it in out of the way sites?? Just curious.

    Yes.

We are still 'realitvely' few in numbers...and...many of us stealth. I can't believe you haven't run into a couple of them on busier trails. I probably saw 50 different folks with hammocks on the AT and I have run into a few of them out here in Colorado. Only saw 2 during my 11 month section hike of the Florida Trail; which really surprised me. That trail should be littered with hammocks.

I've seen a steady increase in hammock hangers among AT hikers in the past 3-4 years. Many hanging thru-hikers seem to still be staying by the shelters at night.

Sometimes I'm stealth, sometimes I'm by a shelter....I guess it depends on my mood

That's probably my problem. Most of the trails I hike aren't very busy.

its funny when you meet new hammockers starting thru hikes on the AT. like in early march, you ask them what they use for insulation: "Oh, my sleeping bag, duh" i just smiled and said OK.
