So, everyone was a beginner once.

What were some mistakes you made, as part of your learning curve?

Then we can compile the 10 crucial things to know for newbies.

Don't panic if you can't think of ten.

    ----

*) Cranking the hammock too tight. You need a bit of sag to be comfy.

*) not sleeping with any under insulation. Brr! who knew that the air around you would mosey off with your heat?

Make sure your suspension is set up properly. The ground can be hard.

Don't use a 50 year old WWII surplus hammock until you replace the ropes.

Make sure the foot end is slightly higher than the head end.

Practice setting up your hammock before going out camping.

If you're setting up in the dark at lower elevations, look down with the headlamp at least once before you set up.

My first hang was over some brush in a river bottom. Some of the brush was poison oak.

Seconded. I hung low over some big rocks one night in Arizona, and was too lazy/tired to find a better spot. Tossed and turned a little that night and my Blackbird suffered a few small tears in the process.

    A few from the past..
    1. Look what's above you...widow makers work for Murphy's Law to destroy a tarp..or worse.
    2. Always imagine what you'll do if it rains...again a Murphy's Law thing
    3. Make a list of gear until it's a habit.....oh yeah, forgot the suspension straps! Drats!
    4. Remember where you put your car keys.
