I reject your reality and substitute my own
Buying a Hennessy Expedition.
Getting wet under the tiny stock tarp.
Attaching the tarp to the hooks on the hammock and it sagging.
Messing around with short stock tree straps.
Buying heavy seat belt straps and paying someone to sew them up.
Buying snakeskins.
Using an interior pad.
Getting bit by mosquitoes for not having adequate under protection or spraying.
1. Stay away from Nylon for suspension line / webbing. It stretches far too much.
2. You will need under-insulation. You will be colder than you think. Non-compressible CCF or Therm-a-Rest types work fine, underquilts are more comfortable.
3. Expect bad weather, regardless of the forecast. Have a tarp ready to deploy even if you think it's not going to rain.
4. Hang fairly close to the ground (such that a fall won't break you). Inspect your suspension before going down for the night.
5. Use your sleeping bag as a top-quilt. It's a real pain trying to wiggle into a sleeping bag in a hammock.
6. For a flatter lay, sleep corner to corner.

I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Bobbin Tension - A Personal Viewpoint
I always get a good look at the suspension before going down.
As a newbie, this is what I have experienced already.
1. Making tree huggers too short.
2. Fearing the sewing machine. (It's not that hard and it's actually fun making your own stuff.)
3. Whip and unwhip until you get it right.
4. Hanging the hammock too tight and too high.
5. Fearing knots. (Practice, practice, practice.)
6. Buying cheap, heavy, noisy, $10 tarp. (Invest in a good tarp.)
Still learning so I'm sure I've got a bunch more mistakes to stumble through.
A few from the past..
1. Look what's above you...widow makers work for Murphy's Law to destroy a tarp..or worse.
2. Always imagine what you'll do if it rains...again a Murphy's Law thing
3. Make a list of gear until it's a habit.....oh yeah, forgot the suspension straps! Drats!
4. Remember where you put your car keys.
