    Crinkle Taffeta?

Sorry if this is a double post, but why do most people seem to prefer ripstop to taffeta?

What are the weight limits for taffeta?

Is taffeta shiny? It looks pretty metallic in some pictures.

Also, what's it like in terms of comfort?

    And how about durability?

I use ripstop for cling hammocks. Taffeta for full time inside.

Don't really have a reason. Just the way it is

I doubt that most people would prefer ripstop nylon (especially calendered) to taffeta if they tried a wide variety of both.

The "metallic" taffeta is probably the tablecloth polyester crinkle taffeta which is different then the taffeta's that (for example) DIY Gear Supply carries.

Taffeta is a weave. It comes in nylon, polyester and probably other materials just as ripstop does. As far as strength goes, just like ripstop, taffeta comes in a variety of weights.

Strength and durability should be comparable between the two weaves.

I now use an 11' 1.9 ripstop as my backpacking hammock due to weight. It is very comfy. The crinkle taffeta hammocks that I use will now be for base camp and for car camping.

So the stuff at tablecloth factory is quite heavy, right? Do you know how much weight it can take?

The polyester crinkle taffeta tablecloth that most use, weighs 2.6oz/sq. yard. Which isn't much heavier than a dual layer 1.1 ripstop nylon, or any other dual layer hammock from any other fabric. I use a bridge hammock made from the same material and it is my camping hammock for all occasions.

    Cheers

The tablecloths can easily handle 300 pounds, I'm about 275 but have a few buds that are well over 300 that use them
