    Tree Distance Pro's and Con's

I understand that the ideal tree distance is somewhere in between 12' to 15'. However in my backyard I have a pair of trees that are perfect, but situated at a few inches over 16ft. I feel like it may be affecting my hang some, but I am not so sure since I am fairly new. Are there adverse effects further than 15' ?

You may have to attach your suspension higher.

    (3 inches! What a burden.)

Hopefully others with more experience will weigh in.

I don't know that I've got much more experience, but that's pretty much it. You'd anchor a bit higher up on the trees and lengthen your suspension a bit more to maintain the right amount of sag. The trees that I usually hang from in my yard are probably closer to 20' than they are 15', and I just anchor up as high as I can reach on them -- I'd rather err on the side of a >30º hang with a bit more sag than go too tight.

Edit: BTW, I just noticed you're in Silver Spring. MoCo represent!

Ok That is what I have been doing to try and compensate for the difference. I just need more practice at doing it to get dialed in I guess.

OOOOooohh another MoCo person. I feel your pain in this concrete jungle.

Try to keep the hammock centered between the trees also. If it isn't the lay will be affected.
If you prepare for failure you will probably succeed.

Centered is best. But on occasions I've had to cheat to one side due to limbs/bushes and I'll cheat to the foot side. Doesn't affect things as much.

What about adjusting so that the head is slightly lower than the feet with whoopie slings. Do I need to hang on tree strap lower or can I make the adjustment with the slings?

You need to make that adjustment on the tree strap height. The hammock will equalize itself once you lay in it, so one longer whoopie won't help that much.

at 16' you're ok. I tried this at 30' in my back yard and I couldn't get the tree straps high enough without using an extenstion ladder. built a hammock stand instead lol

A man can reach only so high yet the size of trees and distance between them is the greatest variable in the woods, almost infinite if we are measuring by 3" increments.

How does one correct for those variables?

The only way to do that is by the relative strength of long suspension lines.

The SRL must be comparable in bearing loads. If I was an engineer I could tell you the deflection quotient. But I'm not so can't. So, I just used the same material in the SRL for my interrupted single line suspension last spring and summer.

I'm on an UL jag right now but in the past I used 1/8" Amsteel and achieved a 32' hang in a local park with my tree straps only about 80" up the tree.

It's all about distributing loads through suspension members. HF needs an engineer and physics lab to conduct experiments with the various materials and usages. But guess-work makes interesting conversation, right?
