What material would i want to use for a decently strong but light weight ground sheet. I was at a beach the other day and started scoping out hang spots just for fun, andthere really was not any viable options without hacking away with a machete.
It occured to me that possibly it might be a good idea to have one along for coastal hiking but all the ones I've found are way too heavy.
as a foot note, a beach or two over I found a good spot.
I thought I was wrong once, turns out I was wrong about that.
a poncho, maybe? would have to risk puncture to your poncho though...

A couple of years ago I got a spinnaker ground sheet from gossamergear .
At the time they sold both "doubles" (as they still do) and a single. I use the single under the hammock as a place to step on when transiting the hammock. My pack often goes on it also. Sturdy lightweight stuff.
A bit of Tyvek sheet also works well. Your cheapest bet is at a building site where you might score a scrap for the asking. A bunch of lightweight gear places sell it also.

Are you a pad user or carry a pad for the dreaded going to ground event?
Back in the ground dwelling kayak era use to use a ccf pad to protect the bag or bivy sack from the sand plus add a bit of insulation. No real need for ground cloth. No pad, or undercover the Tyvek as suggested by Grizz would be my choice. Maybe a DIY Tyvek undercover, poncho, grounding sheet?
