UQ on hammock stand - help!

I finally finished the hammock I've had sitting around half finished for ages!

But as I rushed outside to test out the ripstop-nylon beauty, I found one big problem with this house- NO TREES!

Fortunately we have a hammock stand. My hammock just fits between the stands. (pictures in my gallery) (sorry, will measure length next time I set it up)



So, it was 10-15 C (50-59F) as I was out there, so I had to get my JRB quilts out so I would be comfy as I tested it out.

I'm using a JRB nest (~2005 model, I think). The issue is that the JRB suspension system is adjusted by shifting the shockcord further out along the webbing/rope suspension- my hammock is hard up against the stand. I found it hard to fit the UQ and got cold spots.

(cold spots = when you feel all warm and cozy and then an isolated spot gets cold- maybe a shoulder or something. )

My options: use the ORM for an underquilt and my sleeping bag in the hammock. (though the ORM was SO TOASTY! as a top quilt, not too small at all)
I could chuck my CCF pad into the mix. (sigh.)

I'm planning on rigging a poncho as an undercover to protect from fog, would this add a noticeable amount of warmth?

How can I tweak the nest to get a better fit, in such a cramped space?

I've got 1.5 weeks before a hike/carcamp- if I don't have the bugs ironed out, I'm forced to sleep on the ground.


I was able to use my hiking poles fully extended to string up my tarp, just above the tops of the stand. (so, no lovely "walk into bed" hammockness, I'm still crawling in, like a tent. but it still beats the ground!)

Just lash the underquilt's shockcord to the top of the hammock stand. A slipknot would probably work if you pulled it tight enough.

Easy.... Fold the suspension cord in half, take the mid point back 6 inches and tie an overhand knot.... Then attach on the hanmmock with the regular girth hich at the point you would normally have the secondar hitch... Install and position UQ as normal...Adjust as necessary... Enjoy!

so, how tight should I have the shock cord? I did have it hooked over the stand- are there any "before I get in and feel it" signs I can look for?

I did try the doubled over shock cord trick. I also did try to hook one shock cord through one loop to the other side (like a L shape) and that seemed to help some.

I'll have to have another play tomorrow and take more/better pictures.

If you already tied up the shock cord and its too loose and you don't want to re tie it you could put a sheep shank or two in. Its an easy knot to learn and it's probably my favorite.

I think I found the solution, for this upcoming trip anyway. I swapped out the nest for the ORM, which is thicker. Then I half cinched the ends (too much left a gap) and made the foot box. Then I hooked the biners to each other. So it kind of looks like a butchered bright green peapod.

I'm a small person (5'3 or 5'4), so this mightn't work for some of you bigger guys.

Once the pictures transfer off my camera I'll put them in my gallery and add the thumbs to this thread.
