Which States do allow hanging or which States don't?

I am planning a hike to the USA, I had planned to hike from NY to LA and pick some trails from the ADT but it is very hard to obtain a visum for a year

So probably I have to cut my hike in smaller parts, I have to apply for a visum (give info on costs per day etc.) so I need to know in which States it is allowed to hang my hammock and in which it is not. Is it illegal in some States? If so do you know of a list of campgrounds of different States?

I would appreciate your info very much.

    Thanks from Holland!

If you stay away from State and National park campgrounds you will have no issues.
These types of camp grounds have to deal with so many people camping they have to have extra rules to not damage the land.
Trails that go thru National Forest are my favorite. You can pretty much hang anywhere along the trail.

Post Script- NY to Calif would not be my first choice.

I'm not sure if I wanted to hike along US roads. If I were you, I would rather pick one of the many long distance trails that criss cross the US. Or work out a route along the trails. Wikipedia has a good overview. When I did my research, I found several pictures displaying the network - my quick search now only got me this map, but I'm sure you will find better ones.

As the others said, hanging your hammock does not seem to be a big issue in the US. There might be some areas that explicitly forbid hammocks, but usually it's no problem. Especially if you ask in a friendly way. On pretty much all (commercial) campgrounds, people went the extra mile so that I could get a spot with two trees suitable for my hammock. In the backcountry there are sometimes regulations, but in most areas it is allowed.
