Hello,

My name is John and I am considering taking the plunge and trying a hammock. I have never slept in a hammock.

I have been lurking for a while and registered last night during a fit of insomnia.

I am 5'9" 200lbs and will be using the hammock for motorcycle camping trips.

My best guess is it will be used a dozen times a year from May - Sept for two to three nights at a time.

Locally about all I can find are Byer and ENO's. But I am not opposed to ordering online.

I would like to keep the whole shooting match under $200 if possible for now.

What are your thoughts?

Under $200, hmmm, there is a thread specifically about that here.

I'd go with the Byer if your goal is to keep costs low. Then you can add a tarp for $30 from Sportsman's Guide, some pads from Walmart, and a sleeping bag for the top. Lots of options, but it all boils down to your needs.

I have a tarp, ropes and pad.

I watched Griz's great videos on how to rig and got some ideas there.

I don't know how I missed the sticky on setups by dollar amount, but I will read through that one again and see what I can find there.

You might want to consider a Claytor Jungle Hammock. It comes complete with tarp (you will probably want to replace the suspension straps) for under $150.00 including shipping.

I have done a lot of reading in the past couple of days and I like the business model of warbonnet.

What specificaly make the Blackbird more comfortable than a compareable model from Clark, HH, Claytor (thanks for the suggestion smithobr) etc.

Is it the way you sleep in it?

hey welcome to the forums and if you have everything else I would probably get a black bird. But I personally use a modified eno and really like it but many feel differently.

hmmm...wonder what to get. I've a long history of buying cheap, learning, and then buying right. You are budgeted for 200 bucks. Get a dang blackbird (BB to everyone else) and forget the tarp. If its raining, you already aren't having having fun on the moto, you're soaking wet and campoing out won't dry you. The BB will make you happy on a dry and warm night. Buy a cheap closed cell pad (CCP) and you're warm. You'll end up with an underquilt (UQ). Finally, buy a tarp and you can be warm and dry. Moto $12000. Hammock set up, priceless. Just buy a great hammock to start with and nature will take its course...
