    packing a tarp and guylines...

so tonight I went out after work in the backyard to setup for what will probably be the last night of hanging in below freezing temps until next winter. should be a nice, clear night.

I told my wife it would be just few minutes to set up and I would be back to eat. However, when I pulled out the tarp, the attached guylines were a tangled rat's nest. Took me quite a while to sort everything out. I don't want this to happen out on a backpacking trip, where you sometimes have just a few minutes to setup before a rain or thunderstorm. When I packed the tarp, I just stuffed it (along with the attached guylines) into the stuff sack.

So, is there any way to do so without detaching the guylines and/or ending up with a tangled set of lines? Thx in advance.

I have seen some people do a hand wrap, for me it doesn't work so well. I use a small piece of cardboard and wrap my lines around it. I do the same with my food line also, pictured. The cardboard for my tarp lines is much smaller.

    Good luck!

I do the hand wrap then roll it all up in a set of tarp socks/snake skins. After I get the ridge tied up, I slide the socks off, and unroll all the hand wrapped, untangled goodness uploadfromtaptalk1397613883077.jpg

I tried fussing with the guy lines, but in the end just rolling them up with my tarp and sliding on the snake skins seemed to be the quickest solution. Yah, sometimes I get tangles, but they never seem to amount to much.

I figure 8 wrap them around thumb & pinky finger. They look like barchetta's picture above.

Another vote for snake skins here. I can't tell you the last time I had tangles.

I've seen a previous post on HF with something like 12trysomething's picture, but using small dogbone shaped pieces cut from a plastic milkcarton.
I have just used the fig 8 wrap around finger and thumb and into the snake skins without much problems.

I handwrap and tuck into pockets sewn into the corners of the tarp. The pockets keep the wrapped cordage in order.
