Is wider better? or just extra.....

Have my material, and plan to start building later this week.

Plan is for a simple double layered, gathered end hammock, 10.5' long. (with zipper attached bugnet....) The material I have is 68" wide. Should I keep it at this width, or trim it down to something narrower? Is bigger just better, or is the extra just wasted material? If I should trim it down, what would be a optimal width after seems have been sewn?? It's not that much larger than the standard ~60" roll width, but just curious...

    Thanks....

If you are over 6' tall then keep it, otherwise you don't necessarily need it and could cut it down. Personally I would leave it on, but some would call it waste. Then again, I am 6'2". As far as weight is concerned, its about an oz Or two different if you were to cut it to 60". Hope this helps!

I'm 5'11" and prefer a wide hammock. I don't mind a little extra flopping, so I'd rather have ample room to get comfortable than need some extra and not have it. Plus, you can always do the Knotty mod and have the extra material and no flopping.

But wide hammocks also have their use. I'm thinking they may be more comfortable in the winter if you don't mind shoulder squeeze and want to be completely enveloped by your underquilt.

(Keep in mind that I'm ~5'3")

I have limited hammock experience, but the two that I have been in and which are by far the most comfortable were wide -- ~70". They were also longer -- I started with 12' of material. I don't know if it was the width or the length that accounted for how great they feel. My first hammock was ~60" wide and began with 10'6" of length (there was about 6" less after sewing the end channels). It's easier to not trim the width of the fabric, imo.

my fav diy hammock is 10.5' long about 73" wide, the material was 192cm wide before hemming.
i have tried narrower (60") and it just feels wrong now
personally wider for me is better with minimal weight added.
