    Dealing with sap

I did a quick overnighter Saturday. At the area I was in, I couldn't find a single tree that wasn't covered in sap. The ends of my straps and my 'biners got pretty nasty. No way they were going in my pack so they came off my hammock and went on the outside of it instead. How do you guys deal with this?

The sap will come off with alchohol. I even do it while on the trail if I am good shape fuel wise. Don't like putting that stuff back in my pack. Seems to travel on it's own!

I carry a special set of gloves, either the cotton with the red plastic on the palm or surgical gloves, and a special stuff sack for tree huggers. The gloves go in the sack with the tree huggers. Anything wrapped on the tree can get pretty grungy after a week or so.

If you wait long to get the sap out, it is impossible. I don't bother anymore, I just use the gloves.

I found that by accident one day. I got sap all over my hands setting up my hammock. I used that no water, alcohol based hand sanitizer to "clean up" prior to dinner and the sap came right off my hands!

I use olive oil to remove sap from my tarps. Alcohol would work fine for everything else but I would not use it on a tarp.

Sap is just an element that hangers have to deal with from time to time ... as is rain, mud, bugs, darkness, wind, cold, animals and all that Mother Nature want to expose us to.
I agree that you can get it off with alcohol. I have put my straps in a baggie before after tree goo was all over them. Heck ...I am filthy in the woods any old ways.
