WB RidgeRunner Hiking Pole Spreader Bars

What are the best hiking poles to use as spreader bars for a ridgerunner? I've seen HairBear's video but anybody else using hiking poles?

I and a lot of other guys use the Mountain Smith Trekker pole....buy 2 as they are not a pair. http://mountainsmith.com/index.php/t...x-monopod.html They work perfect and you don't need to do any mods to the pole at all. The camera thread mounts fit the spreader bar buckles perfect, they have a shock, soft grip foam handles and you get the benefit of being able to use one as a monopod to get better self shot photos.

Glad you posted this wanderer. Pgibson, so the camera mount is included in it?

Correct, If you look at the poles on the very top of the handel is a ball of hard foam, just a bit smaller than a tennis ball...maybe 75% of that size. That "ball" is threaded onto a tripod thread. Just unscrew it to mount your camera and or put the pole in place as spreader bars....the ball goes into my saddel bags at night and back on the pole in the AM to hike. They work very well for use as a monopod and that feature makes them perfect as RR spreader bars. I decided which configuraton I liked the stock poles in, for me that's without the 4" head end extension and then adjusted the Mountain Smith poles to be the same lengths, then I simply took some colored electrical tape and put a wrap around the poles to show me right were to adjust to for the head and the foot end poles...red tape on the head end pole and blue on the foot end pole.

I did up this video to cover adjustment and locking out the shock on these last year.

Sounds perfect. Do they require any type of dowel inside ?

Nope. I have not added to or moded in any way other than the tape to mark the lengths.

Sierra Trading Post has Mountainsmith MonoTrek poles in stock. They look very similar to the Trekker FX poles and have the camera mount needed for use with the RidgeRunner. Not sure if these are a precursor or later model than the Trekker FXs - maybe someone else knows. With the always-available STP discounts, you can get these for $28 per pair - or possibly even lower.

Hey Paul. I finally managed to purchase some of these poles from REI. You don't need to add anything to use the tip of the hiking pole? Could you share a photo?
