Heaviest insulation on the bottom or the top? Which is more efficient?

I'm primarily a ground sleeper, but I'm starting to dabble in hammocking as well. I have a Hammock Gear Burow 20 on order, and I'm planning to make a summer quilt with 2.5oz Apex in the near future. Besides giving me a wider temperature range on the ground, the idea is that if I want to hang in moderate temperatures I can use one as a top quilt and one as an underquilt.

So my question is this: would it be warmer to use the Burrow on top and the Apex quilt on the bottom, or the other way around? Where is the most heat lost?

Honestly I hadn't figured out the details. I know Enlightened Equipment advertises that the Revelation can be used as an underquilt, so I figured any rectangular quilt could be fixed up as an UQ with some jerry rigging. I got the Burrow in the wide version with a snap-closure footbox, so I figured I would just attach some shockcord to the corners.

No, I honestly didn't think about that. I'm primarily buying this stuff for ground sleeping, I just had the thought today (after ordering) that it might be able to be multi-purposed into a UQ.

One thought is that since all four corners would have snaps, I'd find matching ones and rig up a suspension that snaps into the corners.

I suppose it's not too late to call Adam and ask for tie-outs, I just placed the order the other day.

The new burrows do come with loops now. I think their primary purpose is to attach the quilt to a pad, but they would probably go a long way toward rigging a suspension.

I'd call Adam. The thing with the Burrow is that it is not differentially cut. Therefore you just have to be careful when rigging it not to compress the down underneath but it can be done. I'd also make sure that Adam sews two loops at the corners of the foot end so you have an attachment point when rigging it up. The Burrow is awesome I have several you will certainly enjoy it.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

Thanks for the advice, I'll give Adam a call and ask him to put some loops in the corners if they aren't already there.

Anybody have input on the original question? Do you think I'd be better off with a warm underquilt and a lightweight top quilt, or a warm topquilt and minimal bottom insulation?

The big bottom will be better IMO.

It is pretty unanimous around here that if you go warmer on the bottom you can go much lighter on the top, but not vice versa.
