    Western Ma Scouting Trip

I took a great hike today, the first one of the season. I'm scouting around to find a mid summer hike somewhere in western Massachusetts, probably around Mt. Greylock, October Mountain, or somewhere similarly situated.

I went with my faithful companion, Charlie, the five year-old golden retriever. For those of you who have not met Charlie yet, he's quite the comedian. I wake up every morning with Charlie standing over me licking my face. He takes it upon himself to let me know when he thinks it's time for us to get up. I have no say in the matter.

Today's hike was great. The weather was sunny and it got into the mid 60s.

I am posting a few pictures of the day, just to give you an idea of the area. Once we get the Harold Parker hang behind us, we can start planning on this one in earnest.

All the best to everyone, hope to see you all soon.

Looks like a great spot. Is that a beaver dam in the fourth picture? If it is that things big.

    2Ply,

That sure is a Beaver Den out in the middle of the pond. I'd call it a dam but its not damming anything. It is an island unto itself. But it is impressive. For a minute, I thought Charlie was going to swim out to it. Then he got distracted by some Mallard Ducks that were a little closer. When they flew off, he gave up and returned to shore. He's a real character.

Good eyes on you for spotting the Beaver Den.

    All the best from Massachusetts.

    Hey Chaaz,

It would be a beautiful spot for a group, but............. It's a good two mile hike up to get to a suitable area. And, now that I'm checking, given that they are designated a state campground, they apparently don't want us trudging through their forest and setting up our own deal without them.

I think we'll be better off at Mt. Greylock in the Primitive Group Area if we want to hike into an area without the fear of being hassled. If the car camping style of a hang is more attractive to the masses, we have some other choices out this way.

We'll figure it out after Harold Parker. I don't want to get in the way of the good work that Megan, Nate, Jerry and some of the others have put into getting that hang off the ground. It's growing and should be fun.

All the best, talk to you soon.

    Semper Fi Fred!

Glad to hear your enjoying the new RR. One of these days I'm gonna hop into Chaaz's and check it out. I'm currently in a Thunderbird, but have always wondered how the other half is living.

All the best. Hope to see you soon.
