How do end gathering methods affect lay?

I'm curious how different methods of gathering ends affect lay. I've seen a few posts about people changing from one method to another to improve comfort. So continuous loops, whipping, biners, whoopies direct, larks heading - what impact do they have if any?

    Thanks!

I've always just sewn channels and ran a continuous loop through them - simple and repeatable. Any other method of whipping or gathering sounds like a black art to me.

Do you larks head the continuous loop on or attach the ends to the suspension? I've seen people change from one method to another to change the lay.

Strictly larkshead. If something works, I stick with it.

This Just Jeff tutorial on gathering and whipping is an example of precisely why I don't use his method - sounds too unpredictable.

I used Just Jeff's "W" method for a while and never had any problems. It was definitely more comfortable than the other gathered end method. I have since switched all my DIY's to knotty mod ends.
I may be dumb, but at least I'm ugly!

I've done so much, with so little, for so long, now I can do anything with nothing.

It's not peer pressure, it's just your turn.

Yeah, I can see how the knotty mod or cat cuts could accomplish much of the same thing

The only gather that really makes things significantly different is the method Ed Speer used... it tightens the edges so the sides are higher.

The longer and wider the hammock, the less the gather affects it... or the more you have to do in the gather to make an effect.
