    Opinion on tarp mods

I took my larger DIY sil tarp I made last year and made a modification, re-sized it to make it a little smaller and tried something different on the corners. Since I have two other tarps, I felt comfortable making some experiments on this one. Take a look and tell me what you think. It is smaller and lighter now, but want to see how it works before deciding how much I like it.

    Thanks

Your corners are similar to the way Warbonnet and some other DIYers reinforce their corners.

Looks great. Nice Video. How do you determine the length of the Gro-gain pieces?

No science there, just picked a length. Approx 7 inches is what I used, totally just eyeballed it.

Looks really good! Nice and clean. I am wondering about stress. On other tarps such as my WB I've seen wider grosgrain used and the gros grain is sewn on the tarp sort of inside the "V" of the corner and not just along the seam to help even out the tension. I would think some reinforcement might be good inside the "V" formed by the grosgrain. I'm no tarp expert mind you, just an opinion is all.

I the past I have sewn a reinforcement patch in the corners, but wanted to try something different this time. I plan to test it out and see how it handles the stress. This is somewhat of an experiment anyway.

Really looking forward to reading about your tests.
I love backyard testing but not of my own work, I have no sewing skills, mostly
different setup, pitch angles, tieouts and mostly for extreme weather.

The only thing I am wondering about on your new tarp would be the inside edge(edge closes to the RL) of the last bar tack.
I have always heard you will weaken the syl if you put holes in it and a bar tack is a bunch of holes.
If the syl rips or tears under load I would think that would be the weak spot.

You did say this is a small fair weather tarp so there is not much chance of heavy winds or snow loads.

Love seeing your work and looking forward to reading about this tarp as well as your new Argon.

Definitely no snow loads in my part of the country...winds might be a different story though. Appreciate the feedback, I an anxious to see how it does. I plan to take it on my next few trips, but will carry my new Argon tarp as well to test....and have a backup. It is light enough to carry as a spare, at least for short trips while I test this out.
