Might be more trouble than it is worth, but can stickies be confined to the first page of a section instead of having to scroll through them on every page?

Not in my opinion. I agree with the OP.
The idea of 'stickies' is that they always appear at the top of the list i.e. act like the newest posts within a forum sub-section, so they appear first.
Scroll down, and you get the latest 'non-sticky' posts.....then go to the next page (for less recent posts) and ....
WTH....there are the darned 'stickies' again.....it had gotten to the point where 2/3 of every page in the DIY forum (not just the first page) of post listings was devoted to 'stickies'....so the owners here wisely (after some suggestions) put the 'stickies' in a separate sub forum.
It's is a nuisance for a new browser here - as I was a few months ago - having to scroll past the 'stickies' on every page....
Oh, yes.... I suppose I've just gotten so used to this across multiple forums I subconsciously just scroll down.
I agree that it would help for those of you that have been on the forum for a while. But the stickies are mostly for the purpose of the new users that come to the forum and don't know the rules and the way that particular forum is run. It is intended to help the Admins and Mods if they are read like we want them to be.

Edit: Well, re-thinking this.. it doesn't help with the # of threads displayed. But still good advice
