Quilt Warmth In Summer-what Do You Do/

Ok, in last minute testing of my gear, I attached my JRBHR UQ to my BB and used the JRBMR as top quilt as I like the extra width. Was outside here in NJ about 68f at night. Woke up way too warm at 1:30 and because of all the loft, was not able to cram it in the foot box or anywhere for that matter to be comfortable. I had left lots of space in UQ setup, so ventilation was not an issue(nice and dry). I sleep warm and was in my skivvies.

My question is should I just forgo the TQ in and use just my light long johns with the UQ? Or Loose the UQ and replace with the 1/8 foam and use the TQ? s

But how sweet these quilts are!!! Just need cooler temps. Hopefully VT will be cooler than NJ!

I would go with a lighter TQ .... once ya' go UQ ... hard to go pad again!!!
Unless getting a lighter TQ is an issue as of now ...... skivvies and a sheet.

The temps are about the same here also, so I've been useing a 1/4" GG pad and a top sheet. If I had a 1/8" GG pad I would use it. This is what I've been doing.

I got a JRB Stealth for summer temps and save the Nest and No Sniveler for when it cools off again.

I'm sure it is is usually way warmer down here, but I mostly can't use much more than a sheet on top. But it might get cool enough to need an UQ, though I don't need a very thick one. IOW, I think the UQ will prove more important to you, so I would be quicker to ditch the TQ, or at least come up with something not so warm.

Summers up here don't really translate to summer quilt temps. My poor JRB Shenandoah is feeling all left out and stuff. Up in the mountains it can be in the 90s during the day, but drop into the low 40s at night. So, 3-Season Yeti below (vented as necessary) and 3-Season top quilt above.

I'm heading out for a hot fun filled whole week spent camping with the scouts. Gonna use my climashield uq and a silk bag liner as a top sheet. Did I mention HOT. Was thinking that I'd still pack my summer down quilt, it packs really small and I've used it before when summer camping and just kicked it all the way up into the foot end of my hammock when I got to warm at night. I perfer to have my gear with me just in case, I'd rather be to hot and kick something off than to cool and not have anything to cover up with.
You could always pack your top quilt in a stuff sack and just have it withen reach at night. Maybe pack it in a larger stuff sack and use it as a pillow.

I think I will try using the UQ and sleep in my light long johns. Good idea just keeping TQ handy in the bag though.

i got my hammock in mid-may and haven't felt the need for a UQ yet. my use has been a 2 week section hike across the bottom half of the state and now the past few weeks on an adventure program w/ the boy scouts as a guide - needless to say i've spent quite a few nights hangning the past 2 months. it's now july. a small 20x20 section of blue pad works just fine on those cold nights after a thunderstorm.

being in NJ you should be pretty close to me as far as temps go...
