    question for the masses

Alright fellow hangers, I have a question. What's with all of the camo? I get the whole stealth hanging idea... But in my experience I'm either far enough off the path when I hang that no one is going to see me regardless of color, or I'm close enough that the camo doesn't hide anything.

I'm used to backpacking gear being colorful. I have a arcteryx backpack that is red. I love it! I love hanging but the best stuff out there only comes in the worst colors...

    Am I missing something?

Nope - you're not missing anything. Some folks just dig camo. Perhaps good patterns are becoming more and more available--and more affordable--in the fabrics conducive to hanging, so more people are simply buying more camo.

For me it's about blending in, not standing out. Too much backpacking gear, and gear in general, is in "look at me, here I am" colors. I understand bright, and rather obnoxious, colors for runners and bicyclists in traffic. The last thing I go to the woods to see is the latest fluorescent colors, I see more than enough hi vis on the job (mandatory, unfortunately, on most sites these days), thank you.

I got started going to the woods to hunt, in doing so being highly visible is bad. As I started camping and hiking the same line of thought went into my gear, don't stand out. Earth tones achieve this quite well. I try to stick to browns, tans, or greens. Camo blends these colors quite well.

Besides, most people just think camo looks cool!!

The camo people will be here shortly to wax poetic on the virtues of camo, but you won't be able to see their posts 'cause they're camouflaged!

Actually, you can find some impassioned defenses of camo in this thread.

    Everything goes well with camo.

Red IS camo in Alabama: highly visible, but you blend right in

But seriously, you're not missing anything. Those that like camo simply would simply rather blend in than stand out.

And I have a black Blackbird too.

I keep all my gear the same color. Mostly because I like this color the most. The color is what ever is on sale or cheapest, because of this I do end up with odd colors that really clash well together. It is how I prefer to shop, just my preference. I think my osprey cactus green pack goes very well with every color under the sun.

I get the reasons for earth tones/camo, but I myself LOVE bright colors. That's part of why I got an ENO hammock - mine is bright turquoise and royal purple and I love it! There are certain hues that just make me happy by looking at them, and so I try to incorporate them whenever I can.
