I'm not a super-gram-counter so I ordered a SF....and I received it straight away. The [digicam] SuperFly I received is quite lovely. I'm one for the versatility of a single unit and this thing should fit-the-bill. I've opened up tarps before in porch-mode(s), so I know that's a great option. But I've never had bonafide doors and I'm looking forward to needing/having those.

I would pay special attention to what an actual thru-hiker did:

I just want to add a caution to those types of videos; You need to know your gear and the choices you are making during gear selection. Many videos don't have rationales or talk about the skills needed to do it their way.

It's not too much tarp for AT! I'm speaking from experience. There are just way to many advantages to this tarp to list. But IMPO I think it was one of my most valued pieces of equipment.

I never thru hiked but i do a few section hikes a year.I prefer hammock gears cuben fiber tarp with doors over the SF. It's lighter and is more than enough coverage for me. It has doors so if the weather gets bad I can use them.I use the SF more in the winter time. If your not concerned about the extra weight use the SF. Have a good hike

I have not hiked the AT, but tarps are designed for different seasons. It seems to me as the weather warms dampness is not as big of an issue. Daily experience with site selection and set-up goes along way. I have not had issues with coverage and staying dry using a MacCat deluxe. To me it's the cold wind I need doors for. Requiring less stake also saves weight. Now a Cuben tarp is scary light and that is what I would carry if taking such a long walk Grams to ounces, ounces to pounds!

I recently went to a talk by Gene Espy, the 2nd person to thru hike the AT (1951). His pack weight then was ~45 lbs, making anything we carry these days seem featherweight. That said, I did just sell my SF's and purchase two HG cuben tarps with doors. Scary light is right.
