Hey all,
I picked up the UL hammock tarp from Mountain Laurel Designs back in late January (they were having a sale on it for $75). Since then they've taken down the page with the information about that product. I was initially under the impression (though now I cannot confirm) that it was a "cuben" tarp. The material is unmistakably woven with a ripstop grid, however, and does not at all resemble cuben fiber. It is slick (almost like teflon) and very loud / crinkly. It really doesn't feel or act like silnylon either.
So the other day I got a small puncture in it. Upon trying to repair it, I have found that nothing will stick to it and stay. I've tried duct tape, packing tape, and two pieces of 3M cuben repair patches from Zpacks. They all peel off as if the tarp were covered in oil, though the 3M cuben patches stay on for a while. I even put the 3M patch under a pile of dictionaries over night to help it adhere.
I am trying to leave for a thru hike within the next week or so and am currently stumped by this piece of gear and, frankly, quite frustrated. I've tried to contact MLD but it's the weekend and of course I'll probably have to wait until Monday.
Do any of you own this tarp? Can anyone confirm what material it is (or give an educated guess)? And most importantly, what suggestions do you all have for something that might actually effectively repair this tarp. The puncture is only about 1/2" wide.
Thanks.
