The best advice I received was buy a quilt rated for the coldest you plan on taking a trip in. The way it was asked to me was "at what forecasted temp would you decide to cancel the trip?"

Enough insulation to keep you warm at your coldest expected hang. Full or 3/4 length which ever suits you best. For cold I like full length, for warmer I like 3/4 length. Draft collars to prevent drafts. (they work great) An UQ that can be slid up or down on the shock cord to adjust to your positioning. Lite weight and easily compressable. Hope this helps.

Here is some UQ intel and a looky-see. Decide if you want full length or partial. Down or Synthetic.
    Carry forth.

Additional advice, decide first if you're truly into hammocking. If this is a yess try and get the one you want to have, not the one you think will do. If you go for the one that will do, you end up spending more to also get the one you want to have afterwards.

Of course, the trick is how to know if you're really into hammocking. I wasn't sure until I ditched the pad for a UQ.

I think the PLUQ might be an good compromise...

That is very true, good insulation together with a comfy hang is the only way to make sure.
For me personally it was the first night where I went knock-out for twelve hours straigth that was the decider. Although my insulation was not all that good I was still way more comfy than on the ground, and better rested.

All of the cottage companies seem to produce great products and you can get pretty much any customization you can think of.

Keep an eye on the for sale thread. There are very nice UQ's that are sold at great prices!

Oh and I 2nd the Shug video series suggestion. Just make sure you have a few hours to spare because after Shug makes you an expert on hammocks, you'll be juggling and flying RC planes....
