    Hello, another from Aussie

Hi there, joined up because I am a newb at Hammocks and need to learn from the forum knowledge bank.

I have brought a Hennessy Safari Deluxe classic and its on its way to me.

I have recently got the bug for backpacking and bivs after having a long break. I am mid-fifties and have had accumulated experience in camping/hiking but I've always had the ground mats on bivs or folding cots in camps. Looking at the gear available now -eg GPS etc etc- its a whole new ballgame. I got a MSR miniworks last week. I tried it out today as well as a used pack I recently acquired, a Mystery Ranch 3 day. Its so nice I made up my mind to sell off my old set of army packs at the back of the wardrobe. I am going for lighter all around. The MR pack is definitely lighter, more compact, more comfy and carries nearly the same amount as the older packs: I did cut out some gear -- today I had a shakedown walk with the aim of cutting out redundant gear and gear that is 'wanted' as opposed to gear that is 'needed'.

Here is the creek and the rocks I used as a spot to do the filtering, enough to fill the canteen.

Here is my hexy brew up (hadn't used this for a few years.. but it still works).

Here is the pack, opened to get at the soup. I plan on stashing the hammock and fly on the outside under the straps that go horizontally across that gut zip.

Its a start, a way to go yet. This creek had some noisy sections as there were loads of rocks and the water was moving along well. The creek is only 20mins away from my suburb.
btw, the photos are from a HTC phone.

If I ever get right up to the top fitness level ... I could take on the Australian Alpine Walk (650 kilometers aka 400 miles), though not in winter. Here is a link to a pair of trekkers who did do it in winter: https://sites.google.com/site/icyadv...-track/scenary

    Welcome from Philly.
When I was a kid the only time we were in the house was to eat and sleep.
