I scrapped the down blanket idea because it would still end up being at least $50, and then I would have to start doing modifications.

I think I'm going to go down a different road and attempt to tailor a military surplus wool blanket (two layers) to work. Cheap, and I think it will be effective enough for my limited needs.

I've got a wool blanket that I added silnylon (waterproof coated ripstop nylon) to just one side. I only use it when car camping or setting up a camp site to stay a while. It's heavy. I've also bought a military poncho liner and just using all the tie outs already on it, tied it to the bottom of my hammock. That works pretty good. And weights less than the wool and folds up smaller too. The silnylon/wool blanket is good for winter tent use as a bottom insulator inside the tent. I wasn't to impressed with using it w/my hammock. This is just my own personal experiences.

I appreciate the info on the wool blanket, and the extra layer would be good as well. I'd probably just use ripstop.
I haven't actually seen a poncho liner at my military surplus store, but I wasn't looking for it when I went. I may have just missed it. I'll have to take a look, and maybe ask the hammock guy that works there what he uses.
