Taping or Seam Sealing Gridstop Nylon and Xpac

It is that time again that I make the next iteration of my backpack and I want to make it where the main pocket is completely waterproof. If only way I could ensure a waterproof inside is to tape my seams and have a roll-top for the main compartment. I've considered using hybrid cuben, but the cost is prohibitive. I am strongly considering using Gridstop with a last resort using Xpac.
If no one can offer me advice, I might just have to go with the Hybrid cuben which would put a hold on the pack until after I save up a bit more.

I sent an email to Chris Zimmer of Zimmerbuilt packs, but I have not heard anything (his site says that he is out of town for a while but doesn't tell for how long).

If anyone has any experience even stories of what DIDN'T work, that would be great. Thanks.

I've seen it somewhere that xpac can be taped. I asked chris zimmer about sealing/taping when we were going over the details of my xpac pack and he said he didn't offer it but that his packs are "almost waterproof" anyway but I could seam seal it if I want to, I haven't seen the need yet.

Just a diy polycryo liner, it weighs nothing (ok, 16 grams I think) and I've used it for 6 nights with no visible wear so far.

I'm gonna give my pack a test in the shower to see how well it actually does in, I've just not gotten round to it yet but I have zero leaks with an hour or so of rain and putting it on wet ground etc.

just an fyi, gridstop does not stay waterproof for very long, my pack's (golite jam) coating delaminated and flaked of after 6 mo. if you want it to stay waterproof stick with xpac, witch i have read is has one of the highest pressure ratings for packcloths.

Thanks. I might actually consider the hybrid cuben then. Dang it. I like Xpac, but it's only available in a whitish gray for the weight I'm looking for.

I know you use Xpac in your current pack. Did you come up with a way to seam seal it? After seeing your rig at the PSH group hang last weekend I've been thinking about trying my hand at pack making.

No, I didn't figure it out. I'm still working on different ideas with different materials.

As much use as your gear gets, a hybrid cuben dry sack/pack liner might be worth it. I've been using Lukesultralite hybrid critter sack for a while now but I also use his 1.0 and 1.5 cuben dry bags for my clothes sack and my down sack. It's kind of a 3 part dry system (sleeping insulation, clothes, food) I'd definitely recommend giving him a call on your taping questions and hybrid interest.

I've considered looking into him as a reference. I hope that I can continue to find the best way to make packs for the outdoor community.
