OK...just back from summer camp where I picked up an Eagle's Nest double hammock to replace the old fashion braided rope hammock (which by the way is for sale for the price of the shipping LOL).
Momma made me go to the pool with the kids because I had been away for a week...so I took these directions and some rope and spliced up 4 whoopie slings. This is way too cool!
    Nice job.

    Fuzzie, Welcome to HF.

Just out of curiousity, how long did it take you to make one? I assume the first one took a little longer.

OK, I finally got around to trying to make one of these, and I have to say IT IS DA BOMB! And it isn't that hard to do.

I picked up some 5/32" and 1/8" aluminum, brass and copper rods at the hardware store (about $1.29 each,) ground the edges to a point, and use those as a fid. I also made a wand by running a wire through a 1/16" tube, and after I run the 5/32" through, I push the 1/16" with the wire through the inside of the 5/32", loop the end of the rope, and then pull the whole mess through. Works alright, and easier than "milking" it through by far.

    LOVE IT!

do you guys notice any difference in the lay, also do you still use a small bit of webbing to wrap around the tree, the webbing being attatched to the sling, or is there no webbing at all. Also how easy are adjustments (describe the process) thanks!

Hey Fin, here's what I use for splicing. They're called Perma-lok needles, and basically you just screw your cord into the end of the needle, and you're good to go anywhere with it. I made the one I use for 7/64" Amsteel Blue out of a Size 5 knitting needle.

I also mentioned a bit back that I put paracord over my eyes for abrasion resistance. Here's a picture.

    Hope that enlightens,
    Acer

I made my first Whoopie sling yesterday for my SBpro. These directions were perfect. The hardest part of the whole process was threading the needle! I did a 10" bury like suggested with 1/8 Amsteel Blue. I guess I'll have to see if it's enough to hold my 300lbs this coming weekend!

I've got some 8-strand poly plumbers pull rope that can be spliced in minutes with no tools at all, and it made great practice rope to train myself on the technique. It looks like a chinese finger trap anyway, so I immediately thought of it for hand splicing. Need to find a suitable whipping twine now. That video was awesome for following along, but seems to drag now that I've done it a couple times.

I just put an eye splice in a chunk of 7/64" Amsteel in about a minute. I'm sure one of your northern friends will help you out on this. You will be hooked, though. It is more fun than sewing, and the result is so cool! Splicing is DA BOMB!

Love the tools, acercanto! Similar, but shorter than what I have. If I get a chance, I'll post pics tonight. I'm taking my rope and tools with me to work today to play with over lunch. That's how addicting this is!
