While we are on fids (fe fi fo fid...) I found this "loop turner" at a JoAnn Fabrics (Dritz 647) about $4. At nearly 10 inches is is a great pull fid, but the tapered end of the 1/8 Amsteel is about the biggest size it will hold.
(The thumb is open in this pic. It actually folds back flush with the shaft at the right and folds forward to cover the end of the hook.)
It has a hook and a thumblike cover. Fold the cover back to open the hook, slip it in the OUT point, down the middle of the rope and exit at the IN point. hook the tapered end you want to bury, flip the thumblike cover over the hook point and pull the fid back out, drawing the tapered end through the bury. Very quick and long enough to do a 10 inch bury without a problem.
Now with all that said, I really like what acercanto did with the knitting needles, so I may be off to JoAnn's again.
