And as far as locking... I follow the directions here...

    http://www.samsonrope.com/site_files/12S_C1_EyeSpl.pdf

When I get A and B out the same hole, and a knot tied, I then take the tail, insert it in a needle and insert the needle into the splice headed away from the dead eye. 1 full needled length. Pull the tail through, cut the length and then it dissapears into the bury. The Amsteel is so slippery, I found I didnt trust it holding with just a knot.

For those that don't like sewing by hand.

I got tired of that fast and now I just hold the bury under the presser foot on the sewing machine, lower the presser foot making sure the bury stays under the needle, then I slowly turn the machine crank and run a row of locking stitches about half the length of the bury.

At this point I do one of two things depending on how ambitious I'm feeling at the moment:

    1. raise the presser foot roll the bury 90 degrees, lower presser foot and run a row of stitches back to the starting point.
    2. raise the presser foot and pull the rope out, done stitching.

I have found either to work equally.

Usually I then tie off the threads and snip close.

Sometimes I just snip close without tying off, even this has worked so far.

I can do this in less than half the time it takes me to stitch the bury by hand not including the time it takes to find the needle, pull some thread off the sewing machine and thread the needle.

Also, I get a lot better stitches than I can do by hand.

I used to use threads from the rope I was splicing. Then I had to pull the splice a few times and finding the stitches almost got me to the point that I was ready to just cut the rope. Now I use black thread on white rope, much easier.

    Nice Tee Dee.

If theres one complaint I have about using the amsteel as the locking thread, its seeing my stitching as Im doing it.

But... It doesnt take that long...

But I think the beauty of using the Amsteel thread for locking is that the matching thread does not show when you are done...important if you sew as poorly as do I.

OK, i finished sewing my fixed eye and connected it to the hammock, nothing terrible happened. Will have to test it for extended use to see what happens. I did the bset i could to go straight, and then the right angle sew, after that i just bounced around alot and sewed it wherever i felt it needed it. Should hold. From the thread i have a little knot of it hanging out where i initially inserted it, i dont see anyway to get rid of it, it does'nt really bother me though.

After I tie my knot, I take the tails and run them in the bury using a large sewing needle. Cut off the excess and the knot dissapears.

Heres a pictorial on how I finsh the lock...

I insert the needle just below the knot. Its important to not have any strands between where the needle goes in, and the knot itself. If there are any strands, the knot wont pull in.

I use a full needle length, 1.5" and pull the needle out on the opposite side I inserted it. This way it runs through the middle of the bury. Its hard to tell in the pic...

Pull it tight, and the knot dissapears..

Give the tail a little tug, and snip short..

    Presto... no visible knot.
