It does not talk much load to start the sling compressing on the standing line, just lift some of the tension off the sling to make adjustments. I usually will grab the end of the bury in one hand and pull up or out whatever slack I need with the other. The hand griping the bury holds some or all of the hammocks weight.

Yeah, I was trying to do this and still failing. I will have to play with it some more I guess.

A whoopie sling is a very easy adjustable suspension to your hammock.
There are a lot of videos about in on Youtube, this one for example:

I openly admit that I didn't read all 70 pages of this thread, and someone likely already posted something like this, but...
I have amsteel whoopies on my Frankenbird and LOVE them.

A friend gave me a complete parachute to use for parts/materials and I started removing the lines that tie the chute to the pack. My friend said they are spectra, but I'm not 100% sure. regardless, they are much thinner than the 7/64 amsteel blue I've been using.
Long story short: The thin spectra is not strong enough for whoopies to use as primary hammock suspension. The first time I gently lowered my 190 Lbs into the hammock both whoopies made noises, but neither failed. I saw no visible damage. The second time one of them snapped about an inch from the figure 8 knot that I used for the larks head loop to attach to the hammock.

I also made a ridgeline with a whoopie at one end so I can adjust. That seems to be holding just fine. And it is working great as tarp ridgeline and tie out line.
I'll be swapping out the amsteel ridgeline on my DIY HH Hex tarp for the parachute line, and using the amsteel to make whoopies for my new DIY 1.1 DL.

I wish I had more details on the exact specs of the parachute line. Thought it may be useful to anyone like me that is curious about using something smaller than 7/64 amsteel.

If your using it with a marlin spike, it makes final adjustments easy. Once you have the strap with the marlin in, and your whoopies hooked to it, if you need to adjust, you won't have to play with the marlin. There are a few videos on youtube, and Shug has one. That's were I learned about them.

Great thread - thanks, is there any information that combines this with a locked brummel to have the loop as a larks head? Looking at over all length of the raw amsteel for a 6 - 8 foot whoopie.

...and I love my whoopie slings, too!

sometimes, though, the trees are just a tad bit too close together or i'm hanging in a shelter and i wish i could reduce the length of the sling to shorten up my overall hang length. has anyone tried adjusting the sling to the right length to circle the tree or post, then putting a marlin spike into the adjustable part of the sling and not use any webbing at all? I'd use sticks aroung the tree to protect the tree from the sling if this would work... or do you have any other tricks for shortening hang length in a pinch? I sure don't want to change the overall approach since it works so well 99 percent of the time.
