Question: How many inches of bury do I need for putting the loop on the end that holds my hammock, or say on the ends of amsteel tree huggers (to be used with sticks around the tree for protection).

Here is a PDF describing how to make a whoopie sling. It describes the lengths in FID lengths due to differing diameters of rope.

Here is a page describing how to determining what the appropriate FID length is per rope diameter that you are using.

Example: 7/64" amsteel Blue, average break strength 1,600#

Whoopie sling made per above instructions: 60% of average breaking strength. = 960#

7/64" diameter rope would use a FID length of 2 1/3"
a short FID would be about 0.78" or 25/32"
and a 1/2 FID would be about 1.17" or 1 3/16"

I guess I could have just given you the easy answer and said that the bury length is as follows per diameter of rope.

7/64" = 4 2/3" bury

1/8" = 5 1/4" bury

3/16" = 8" bury

Thanks, I ordered one set from Opie to see what's going on. The ones I made do not have the correct amount of bury.

I use a "loop turner". Here's one...Loop Turner on Amazon(dot)com.

I've used a guitar string doubled over.

On 7/64" Amsteel I use a 24" piece of .035" stainless steel fishing leader wire folded in half and the folded end crimped down with pliers. Works quite well.

I'm currently using .030 welding wire. It is a fairly stiff wire for it's diameter.

Hey, making my first whoopie sling. Got my 1/8" amsteel.

I have one point I am unclear on and I've read and read and watched videos so I'm just going to ask as this seems like a most helpful community and maybe you won't chide me too much for a dumb question...

For my end loop, it seems like for the fixed eye there are two choices, the locked brummel and stitching the tail of the eye's bury.

The locked brummel seems like a definite weak point but the easiest to do. Does the overall strength of this material make it unnecessary to be concerned about this?

The stitched tail brummel seems like the stitching replaces the hold of the constriction. Isn't this a weakness as well and aren't you now relying on the stitching most of all at the fixed eye?

Forgive the novice question. Has there been a consensus on which method is better?
