While we are on fids (fe fi fo fid...) I found this "loop turner" at a JoAnn Fabrics (Dritz 647) about $4. At nearly 10 inches is is a great pull fid, but the tapered end of the 1/8 Amsteel is about the biggest size it will hold.

(The thumb is open in this pic. It actually folds back flush with the shaft at the right and folds forward to cover the end of the hook.)

It has a hook and a thumblike cover. Fold the cover back to open the hook, slip it in the OUT point, down the middle of the rope and exit at the IN point. hook the tapered end you want to bury, flip the thumblike cover over the hook point and pull the fid back out, drawing the tapered end through the bury. Very quick and long enough to do a 10 inch bury without a problem.

Now with all that said, I really like what acercanto did with the knitting needles, so I may be off to JoAnn's again.

    ikemouser,

No difference in the lay of the hammock.

Using the webbing around the tree to protect the tree. My webbing has a sewn in loop at the end. I slip the free end of the webbing through the loop and pull it tight on the tree. I make a marlin spike hitch with a toggle and hang the whoopie sling from my hammock on the toggle.

Adjustments are super easy to make in very small or large increments as you need. Pinch the end of the bury (where the rope comes out of the bury section) in one hand and pull the buried rope ( the free end) out with the other hand. it helps if you push toward the middle of the bury with the first hand a split second before pulling the free end.

That sounds way more complicated than it is. Basically grab the bury in one hand and pull the free end in the direction you need to with the other.

    Hope that helps

I got one a while back but always seemed to snag the thing on the inside of the bury. I did find it very useful, though, in pulling elastic through sewn draw tubes.

For splicing, a bodkin I found at Joann's has worked better for me.

    YMMV

Yeah, I find I have to be careful with the initial push through, but the pull has not given me any problems.... yet. Let's just say that it is a vast improvement over the original darn yarn darning needle. That's why I'm interested in acercanto's threaded knitting needles. They actually look like a real fid.

    Vids Vids Vids

I think I am understanding the process as it presently stands in its evolution. I still want to see a vid of someone hooking it up and adjusting it. Once I get mine all done I will do it but I know there is someone out there that is all ready to film a little clip for us..

A little tip, from someone who does a TON of AmSteel splicing.
Use a small stiff wire, like mig/tig wire.
I take and half the wire and make a look then twist the rest of it.
I can take a photo or two if needed.

    Thanks for the tip.

So, the shaft/handle is a spiral twist its whole length?
