No worries. Yeah, we've covered a lot of ground in this and the other seminal threads.

I remain skeptical of omitting drip rings in that success in utilizing whoppie tails, knots &/or drip strings is subject to many variables and that that passive wicking may be overwhelmed in the right conditions. From a safety standpoint, I need secure knowledge that my down will not get wet.
You should obviously go with what feels right to you. Others more experienced than I can walk you through their own rationale for the various options. I originally felt that way about the rings but, in my limited experience, I've been well served by simple drip loops.

I would like to avoid attaching Amsteel blue to the gathered end with a knot and prefer a closed eye w/larks head.
This might not be your cup of tea, then, but I've had good results in my latest setups with a double sheet bend variant, using loops of various ilk: a continuous spliced loop, a zeppelin bend loop and, most recetly, a lanyard knot loop.

I cannot figure out how to keep my minimum hang span down to 11.5' – 12’ and still accommodate preference 1 & 2 above.
I'm at about that point, but I make my hammocks a bit shorter than most seem to prefer. Everything (except part of my UCR buries) fits under a 10 foot tarp ridgeline. If your tarp will fit in that 11.5' - 12' space and your hammock fits under the tarp with adequate coverage I'd think you could make it work.

Hope you find what you're looking for.

It occurs to me that, since lightest weight isn't among your desiderata, you might try just a simple lightweight climbing-rated carabiner between your continuous loop and your whoopie sling. Given your proposed ridgeline length and my seat-of-the-pants memory of bury lengths, I think you could fit everything within your allotted tree spacing.

    Just a thought...

Frawg, thanks for taking the time to provide your insight.

Can you tell me what you mean by a continuous spliced loop? Is this a continuous lop that could then be larksheaded onto the gathered hammock end?

    You're more than welcome, sir!

Yes it is, although I never used the lark's head approach. Here's one the way I used it at one point:

Edit: it was first discussed on page 18 of this thread, btw.

    Cheers!

Well I'll be gall-darned!!!! Here I am hoping to glean what I can before I start making my new hammock, and I see a reference to my own website!!!

So cool. I love it. Glad the video is useful.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to see how I'm going to setup my rig...

+1 to that! I have seen this website mentioned in several threads (and for good reason). Probably the best I've seen, and I watched an awful lot of videos trying to figure this whole whoopie sling thing out. This was the one that did it for me . Thanks for that, and welcome to the forum.

First set complete... a few questions...

My amsteel arrived today, and I just had to play with it. I set out to make a couple of 6' slings, so I measured the 13' as prescribed, got my fixed eye set and buried, and then marked off the 10" bury length as prescribed and make some whoopie... When completed this bury ends up being around 8 1/4" long.

Question: Do I need a 10" bury BEFORE making whoopie? Or do I need a 10" bury AFTER making whoopie? Will these be safe to use on a hammock?

    Thanks!
