Feel free to knock (or discuss) the idea as much as you like, it's the only way ideas evolve into something useful, even I don't think this is my best idea, I prefer to use my Loopy Line suspension idea, but with 187 views and no replies obviously everybody else is too confussed by it to comment.

Oh, and to answer your question, it is actually no harder to adjust than a normal whoopie.

No knock, just wonderment. Love to see new ideas!

I will be making a pair for testing. And I'll have to give the loopy line a once over too...

    Cheers,

Got a hold of a local archery shop this afternoon to make a couple of aluminum tubing pieces for toggles. The owner gave me free of charge something I thought might be better.

Carbon fiber. 1/4" x 2 3/4" When he first offered them I first thought they might crush under the pressure of the Marlinspike hitch, but since the whoopies are on the knot, not the spike, they worked nicely.

Hooked it up in the backyard and they held up.
They both weigh less than ONE of my 1/4" dia. x 2 3/4" toggles made from aluminum stock. One of them is barely noticable in my hand.

PLEASE tell me I'm not the first to think of this...Anyone?

I'll attach photos when I figure that out...

    EDIT: Photos Added (I think)

I've read of a number of folks trying carbon arrow shafts. Most seem to report failure after a few uses, but you'll find a few lucky souls that use them longer without failure.

I usually just find a stick nearby the camp site. Adds zero weight to my pack

We've got them on our site and I use them all the time. Like you or Shug said "on the knot, and not on the toggle"

    Homemade Whoopie on WBBB

    Hi, all
For ease of modification and to keep the link that keeps rain water from draining to the hammock is there any reason I can't just remove the straps from my WBBB (to use as tree huggers) and tie the larkshead knot on the hammock end to the aluminum triangles? I's a few extra grams and a couple additional inches, but it certainly seems preferable to having to under the whole tie to the ends of the hammock.

    If I understand you

    1. remove straps from triangles
    2. attach fixed eye of whoopie sling to triangles via a lark's head.

    that will work just fine.

you might even consider making your whoopie sling's adjustable loop cord go right through the triangles, so that the fixed eye is up near the tree. Allows you to adjust the suspension while under the tarp, and avoids the issue of having the adjustable loop "jump" off the marlin spike hitch when the hammock is not under any sort of load.

Thanks, GA. 1 and 2 are correct.

You're idea of putting the adjustable loop at the triangle side, however, is excellent. I'll be hanging from the occasional birch, but mostly from pine, fir and cedar. Doing it the "traditional" way would mean fighting (often wet) branches to adjust. With your way I can just slip the fixed loop over a toggle and then adjust from the other end (and, as you say, do ongoing incremental adjustments from under the tarp).

Anyone see any issues with doing things that way?

This will be an excellent "in the field" project. I'll take along my amsteel and threading wire and make my whoopies and do the conversion some slow sunny afternoon when I'm off the water and looking for something to keep me busy.

I have a similar question. Still very new at this and always want to say thanks for all the great info here. I just ordered whoopies for my HH Safari. I wondered if there would be any negatives, other than weight, w/just cutting the stock rope long enough to tie on a descender ring and attach the whoopie to that. That way I could use the ring to try other lengths or types of suspension easily and it seems the ring would serve to redirect any water coming down the whoopie. Thanks again.
