For those that haven't made or bought the whoopie slings, I used Opie's last night and now I can say enough positive about them. They are soooo simple to use...once you've done it once and effective. Love the gun metal color of the amsteel Opie made.

Got my amsteel in from AHE today, just finished making my whoopie slings! Made em out of 7/64. I think they will do me find -- the range on them is 22" to just over 64" (that's with leaving enough for a slippery half-hitch just in case)

I was caught off guard by how easy this rope was to work with after using some other rope to mess around with the idea at a friends house.

Glad I have them now, can't wait to go use them. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Sweet. Next time you make a set put a bead on before you bury. That will prevent you from accidentally pulling the loop out. I read that somewhere on this same thread. It was a great tip. Those look great. You will be very happy. I used mine for the first time Sat night with no slippage at all. I was really impressed. Mine are made from Dynaglide.

Actually, you can just tie a short piece of rope or twine loosely around the line of your whoopie loop to prevent accidentally pulling it all the way in and the loop becoming a backsplice. The bead is nice, though, if you think of it ahead of time.

All the slings I build have a bead built into the adjustable eye.

I might mention here that I am using a pair of Opie's Whoopies on my Blackbird right now and last week, when I was breaking camp in a hurry to beat the rain, I yanked the sling not realizing I was standing on the free end. Anyway, let's just say that bead came in handy.

    Thanks Opie!

Finally, someone actually got some use from the bead aside from the coolness of it.

    haha

Wow... After reading the entire thread I feel like I just climbed Everest! My advise to anyone that has skipped to the end with out reading the whole thread is to go back to the start and read the entire thread (PS: pack a lunch it's going to take a while).

Fantastic advise and although I have yet to make my first whoopie sling I feel ready to give it a try. I just ordered some Amsteel Blue and by this time next week I'll be "making whoopies"... Obviously I am getting on the whoopie sling train a little after the fact but it was really neat reading the thread after the fact and seeing the evolution of the idea and the techniques. Thanks to all for the input, SlowBro for the excellent start to this adventure and Grizz for the great videos (whoopie slings, marlin hitches etc...).

Hammock Forums rocks! The good advice and sharing of quality info has made my first year as a hammocker a real pleasure.
