    Silnylon vs. SpinnUL

For those of you that have switched over from sil to spinn, besides weight have you found any other benefits? From what i've read the spinn does not stretch as much, anything else? When I felt it, it seemed stiffer. Does it make it more difficult to get a tight pitch, is it noisier, more susceptible to puncture, water resistance?

Yeah, mine is noisier if I don't get a tight pitch, but I find it easier to get a tight pitch so it may cancel out. The "no stretch" means that once it is pitched I don't have to readjust later like I did with the sil. Love mine!

it's like wax paper, but waterproof.

like slowbro said, it's also like ron popiel. set it and forget it. no readjustment needed on mine. no misting through either, that i've noticed anyway. it's also more expensive. it's only noisy, like slowbro also said, if it's not pitched tight.

    i recommend brian's from oes

Yea i will get one someday, what Shug said about the water proofing failing when you rub it against itself in your hand worries me. I would need my tarp to last miles and miles, as It would be for thru hiking. Anyone know about how the durability is for sil vs spinn?

Spinntex might be polyester ripstop. Probably one of the reasons it has minimal stretching after pitching. No need for tarp tensioner reduced the weight a bit more. Higher pitch/frequency maybe louder sound of the rain drops bouncing off the tarp on the Spinn. Durability debate. Some people have noted less long term durability. Have had a variety of windblown smaller objects (finger thick branches, acorns) hit the Spinn tarp without any damage. Spinn should be more UV resistance if it is a polyester. Concern over the friction wear reducing water proofing and structural integrity has me skinning the Spinn tarp bit more careful. I sort of roll it up around the ridgeline like furling a sail around a boom. Newer tarp. See what happens after 50+ nights & UV exposure.

If you get the heavy weight cuben fiber it is much more water proof and the "coating " can not wear off

Im torn between the two as well, i want something that will last though. Sil seems to last longer-at least from what others are saying, i dont wanna be buying 3-4 tarps a year if i dont have to.

I was talking about spinnaker, not sil. I went with sil for now because of the issue with the waterproofing coming off by wear and tear on the spinnr's.
